To infinity and beyond
Blasting into theaters on June 17, 2022 is Lightyear. The Pixar film tells the real-life adventures of Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, who was eventually made into a toy and one of those toys became property of Andy, then Bonnie. And recently, the first trailer for the movie arrived, and it's wonderful.
Tim Allen famously played the role in Toy Story 1-4, but in Lightyear, the real-life version of the toy will be voiced by Chris Evans (Knives Out, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer). The 2022 movie follows Lightyear on an interstellar mission, and while there is little known about the plot of the movie, it's very clear this is Lightyear's "origin story."
Taking a look at the brand-new trailer, we got a better idea of what this movie is about and saw a few Easter eggs along the way. Come check out this breakdown of the Lightyear trailer as we unravel the real identity of the Space Ranger who falls with style.
Property of Star Command
Based on Lightyear's tags, he has an O Positive blood type, which is the most common blood type according to the Red Cross. Now you know his blood type, something no Toy Story fan ever thought would be a thing you learned about Buzz Lightyear. And not that it really matters, but his name is in fact "Buzz Lightyear."
Crystallic Fusion in action
Toy Story fans know that the power source for Star Command's ships and suits is crystallic fusion. Here, we get to see one of these crystals being loaded into Lightyear's ship.
Closer look at the crystal
This crystal is going to power Lightyear's journey into space.
Buzz Lightyear's ship
This is the first shot we see of Lightyear's ship. While in the animated series his ship is named "Star Cruiser 42," there is an "XL 01" printed on the side here, which we're guessing is the name of the ship. It's a bit of a coincidence as on the animated series, XL was the name of a robotic Space Ranger that went rogue and got real violent.
Considering there's a "01" on the ship, this could mean that this is Star Command's first trip into outer space with crystallic fusion.
Star Command
Here is a shot of Star Command, and all systems are go. Hawthorne watches on. It's unclear right away who Hawthorne is. She works for Star Command though.
He has hair?
Throughout all four Toy Story movies, Lightyear had that purple cap on his head, so we never got to see his hair. This is the first shot in the trailer of his hair, and it is a little unsettling.
A secret mission, in uncharted space
We see Lightyear and an unidentified robot peek over a rock. At this time, we're not sure who this robot is, but considering there's already been a few animated series references in the trailer, this could be XR, the second robotic Space Ranger.
A robot in the distance
It looks like Lightyear can't get back to his ship because there's something in the background. Let's enhance that.
A Zurg robot?
Upon closer inspection, it very much resembles one of Zurg's robots, which we saw in the opening of Toy Story 2, when Rex was playing the Buzz Lightyear video game.
Familiar robot design
Briefly, we see a robot in front of a dry erase board. The robot's name is E.R.I.C. While this is speculation, the design looks a lot like some of the older robots from WALL-E--like the titular robot. The majority of the robots in that movie have names that are acronyms or initialisms, which is what E.R.I.C. seems to be. Maybe we're grasping at straws, but could this movie also be Earth's past for the movie WALL-E?
Time travel?
From the looks of this plan, a bunch of people are going in a giant space ship, and Buzz will look around a sun and will hit hyper speed, being able to travel years in a matter of minutes. Why is this plan happening? Well, we don't know that part just yet.
If he is travelling through time, it makes this Lightyear (as Mrs. Nesbitt) quote so much more intriguing. "One minute you're defending the whole galaxy. And suddenly, you find yourself sucking down Darjeeling with Marie Antoinette and her little sisters."
Zurg?
There is a quick scene of a container opening, surrounded by red and purple light, which is totally the calling-card for Evil Emperor Zurg, Lightyear's nemesis. Sure, the scene quickly cuts to the Space Ranger outfit afterwards, but we don't think those two are connected. Speaking of that outfit....
Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger
It looks like the left arm on the outfit could home a laser, and the buttons on the left side are all there, but where are Buzz's wings? How will he be able to fly? Also, does this thing glow in the dark?
Remember... Buzz has hair
This is a brief reminder that Buzz has hair and it's still a little unsettling.
Lightyear isn't the only Space Ranger
Before we even see Lightyear in the full Space Ranger suit, we get to see Hawthorne in one. It's pretty clear at this point that the two are partners, adventuring together.
There it is
Finally, we get the shot of Buzz Lightyear in the full Space Ranger outfit, and it feels so good.
