Samus Edition New 3DS XL, Metroid and Samus Amiibo
Metroid: Samus Returns is a reimagined version of Metroid II: Return of Samus that came out on the Game Boy back in 1991. It's set to launch on September 15 along with a special edition, which features sweet reversible box art that pays tribute to the original game and a 25-song soundtrack on CD.
In anticipation of the new game, Nintendo has released two new Amiibo figures and a new edition of the New 3DS XL system. Let's take a look at what we have here!
New 3DS XL Samus Edition
The Samus Edition of the New Nintendo 3DS XL will hit store shelves on September 15 for $200, alongside the release of Metroid: Samus Returns. Take note that it does not come with an AC adapter/charger, like other New 3DS XL packages (the new 2DS XL does, however).
Top screen's backplate
The backplate on the top screen sports a multi-tone patterned burnt orange paint job with a highly detailed sketch of Samus Aran herself.
Bottom screen's backplate
The backplate of the bottom screen rocks a gold paint job with the multi-tone pattern and the iconic screw attack symbol.
Opening the Samus Edition New 3DS XL
There's nothing new in terms of functionality; all the New 3DS XL features and buttons are found here. However, the matte black finish gives this edition of the 3DS XL a sharp look and a neat contrast to the glossy screens.

Backside of the Samus Edition New 3DS XL
Here's the backside of the Samus Edition New 3DS XL, essentially how everyone else is going to see it when you're playing your games!
Topside of the Samus Edition New 3DS XL
Nothing new here with the L, R, ZL, and ZR buttons and charging port. Again, be aware that you won't get a charger with the system.
Samus and Metroid Amiibo two-pack
On to the Amiibo! For $30, you'll get both the Samus and Larva Metroid Amiibo together. Like the special edition 3DS XL system, these are set to release in conjunction with the launch of the new game.
What will the Samus Amiibo unlock?
According to Nintendo, the Samus Amiibo will unlock an Aeion reserve tank allowing you to recharge Aeion energy in Metroid: Samus Returns. In addition, you'll get a Metroid 2 art gallery once you finish the game.
What will the Metroid Amiibo unlock?
The Metroid Amiibo will grant you Metroid Marker in the new game, which helps find nearby Metroids. It'll also unlock Fusion Mode, which increases the game's difficulty and give Samus her Fusion suit, although you will need to finish the game once.
Samus facing off with a Metroid
We're 100% certain Samus can take on a lone Larva Metroid; she's done it time and time again.

A Metroid breaking out of its tank!
We can also see the level of detail in the Larva Metroid Amiibo as it breaks out of its tank.
Squishy Metroid!
Much like what you'd expect if larva metroids were real, the Amiibo has a squishy membrane! Good thing it doesn't hurt us.
Metroid and Samus together
Will you pick up the Metroid and Samus Amiibo, or the Samus edition 3DS XL?
The Samus Edition New 3DS XL ($200) and both Samus and Metroid Amiibo ($30 together) are available starting September 15 alongside the release of the game Metroid: Samus Returns.
