Go go Power Rangers

During the '90s, there was nothing cooler than the Megazord from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Five robotic dinosaurs came together to create a giant robot that would beat up whatever weird monsters Rita Repulsa created for that episode. And every week, the battle destroyed Angel Grove. Don't worry, it was all fixed next week.

Since Hasbro has been releasing some pretty cool Power Rangers toys in the Lightning Collection, it was only matter of time before we'd start to see some Zords. Now available for preorder on Hasbro Pulse, the Lighting Collection Dino Megazord is here, and Hasbro sent us one to check out. Is it like everything you remember from the 1993 toy? Yes, but it looks even more like its TV counterpart, and it still separates into the separate robots.

Let's go through some of the features of the collectible and some thoughts on it below.

An interesting unboxing experience, pricing, and release date

Even the unboxing of the Megazord is a fun experience. On the inside of the lid is a scene featuring the Megazord fighting Goldar--something I didn't see until writing this. Each of the smaller Zords are in their own compartment, creating a unique experience before you put the Megazord together.

Currently the Dino Megazord retails for $166, with a limit of two per customer. This is expected to ship on September 1, 2022, so it's right around the corner.

Mastodon!

The Mastodon looks great, with no noticeable differences between this and the promo images on Hasbro Pulse.

Pterodactyl!

The Pink Ranger got the short end of the stick. The Pterodactyl isn't the most interesting of Zords. Yes, it has blasters on the tail--I just forgot to put them on before taking the photo.

Triceratops!

The head moves up and down, the mouth opens, and the blaster on the tail is movable. This really doesn't do much else, but did the Triceratops, on its own, really do a lot on the original series, outside of a few small moments.

Sabretooth Tiger!

The Sabretooth Tiger is one of the more fun singular Zords in the mix. The legs and mouth move, and there's also a tail as well.

Tyrannosaurus!

The Tyrannosaurus has a lot going on, as the only Zord that had one-on-one fist fights with other monsters. There's a lot of articulation here. However, this is about the Megazord, not the individual Zords.

Tank Mode

While skipping out on Tank Mode may be something most people would deem forgivable with a release like this, Hasbro made it a part of the release. The Mastodon head sticking to the Tyrannosarus' chest was a bit tricky when putting it together, but overall, it was an easy setup.

Tank Mode

Here's the profile of the Tank Mode.

Megazord Battle Mode

This is what you want to see though. The Megazord comes with two sets of hands--one to hold weapons and the other open hand for slapping the hell out of Rita's monsters. Aesthetically, this is the best looking Megazord that transforms to date. It's in 1:144 scale and is primarily inspired by original concept art from Zyuranger, the Japanese sentai series.

Final thoughts

Yes, $166 is a high price tag for a Megazord toy, but this is more of a collectible than something you'd pick up in the toy aisle of your local retailer. There is an immense attention to detail, to the point where you can see the Rangers themselves in each of their Zords and all of them in the cockpit of the Megazord. It's easily the coolest toy to come out of the Lightning Collection thus far--and it will be even cooler when the Dragonzord is released next year.

That's not the only major Power Rangers collectible coming from Hasbro though...

Red Ranger Power Sword

Much like Hasbro's Star Wars The Black Series lightsabers, the Red Ranger Power Sword is more than just something that sits on your shelf. It lights up with touch-activated technology. When you brush your hand on one side, the light comes on. When you swing it around, you get sound effects from the TV show as well. Plus, the box art is pretty fantastic.

More info on the Power Sword

The best part is that when you click one of the two buttons on it, the Power Rangers theme song plays. And yes, I pressed that button a lot while messing with the Megazord. Additionally, it comes with a display stand. It looks very cool, but it's obviously very big, as it is modeled after the one Jason and Rocky carried on the show.

The Red Ranger Power Sword is available now on Hasbro Pulse, and it retails for $220. Coming soon in the Lightning Collection are the Blue Ranger's Power Lance and Green Dragon Dagger.
