Prime Video's Lord of the Rings TV show is fast approaching, and a new trailer was released today.
Our first full length trailer for Prime Video's upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show, Rings of Power, has arrived--and it's a doozy. Not only do we get closer looks at some of the characters we've been eyeing since that first teaser dropped, we can even begin to glean a better idea of what the plot might be (beyond, you know, the rings of power being forged) and some teases for some potential surprises. Afterall, while Rings of Power is based in the canon universe and timeline of Tokien's work, it is still including new characters and ideas that are original to the show.
We sat down and went through the new trailer frame by frame to see what we could surmise and found everything from potential hints at Gandalf's arrival on Middle-earth (is that him in the fiery crater?) to the moment that the Dwarves seal their fate by digging deep enough to uncover Mithril in their mines--and much more.
There is a lot going on in this trailer--so much that we couldn't possibly capture or guess at every last detail. There's visions of Sauron's rise, the downfall of both Moria and Numenor, Wargs, Orcs, and even proto-Hobbit parties. Those proto-Hobbits are called Harfoots, by the way, and they're going to be a massive part of this show, so it might be good to brush up on some Hobbit history and genealogy while you prepare. In the meantime, here's 25 details and moments in the trailer that you definitely don't want to miss.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuts on Prime Video on September 2.
1.) Arriving in Numenor
"There was a time when the world was so young," the voice over states as we're treated to a sweeping shot of what must be a river way into Numenor, the great kingdom of men. Notice those faces carved into the cliffsides? They're likely tributes to past kings--they're visually very similar to the gates of Argonath, which stand at the entrance to Gondor, which we saw in the original film trilogy.
2.) Hey, Galadriel
Galadriel is a major player in the show, and we'll be seeing a lot of her in the trailer. This first shot deliberately evokes the dreamy, hazy feel of her first appearance in the Fellowship of the Ring movie, where she was played by Cate Blanchett.
3.) Notice this music?
The music throughout the trailer is original for Rings of Power but it's definitely evoking a song from Fellowship very deliberately--it sounds just like The Council of Elrond Assembles.
4.) - The Two Trees of Valinor
We get a great shot of the two trees of Valinor, Telperion and Laurelin, which provided the light for the realm of Valinor (AKA the Undying Lands.) That means this moment is actually giving us a glimpse of the lands beyond the seas, not Middle-earth proper.
5.) Is that an Eagle?
As we get a sweeping shot of what might be a caravan of elves walking over the snowy mountains, we also see what could very well be a giant eagle flying through the sky. Eagles within Lord of the Rings aren't just cool looking birds, and hold great magical and mythical significance--around the Second Age, we'd expect to see some eagles living in Numenor and around the peaks of mount Meneltarma--which might be the exact mountain we're seeing here.
6.) Rivendell
This beautiful Elven city is probably Rivendell, judging by the waterfall vistas.
7.) Moria
In the Second Age, the Dwarven kingdom of Moria was thriving.
8.) We Harfoots have each other
The Harfoots are the ancestors of the Hobbits, as you can very easily tell by the way they dress and, apparently, celebrate in the woods. If there's one thing Hobbits love to do it's throw parties.
9.) A comet
We saw a comet arriving in the last teaser, too--and later in this trailer we see a man in a fiery crater. It could very well be the arrival of Gandalf, though the timeline here doesn't quite add up to what we'd expect. However, if this is indeed him, having him crash land among the Harfoots could go a long way in explaining why he has such an affinity for Hobbits.
10.) You have fought long enough, Galadriel
Elrond has some advice for Galadriel that she is reluctant to take--though it's not clear exactly what she is fighting for or against here. She emphasizes that "the enemy is still out there," which could be a reference to the looming threat of Sauron--at this point in the Second Age he hasn't officially "become" Sauron just yet, but the vibes are definitely getting pretty rancid.
11.) The question now is where?
The most interesting moment in this brief series of clips appears to be a group of people--likely Elves--walking through what could be a cave or an abandoned, iced over castle. There's a giant monster hand in the lower corner of the screen, meaning they're not alone.
12.) Numenor?
This is likely an overhead shot of a port within Numenor--other major human cities like Gondor wouldn't exist yet.
13.) You have not seen what I've seen
Galadriel has the power to see visions of the future and we get a glimpse of one here--a nightmarish look into what must be the rise of Sauron, formed as his iconic fiery eye atop his tower. This must be what Galadriel is trying so hard to prevent.
14.) Elendil and the faithful?
We can see nine ships within the port of Numenor here, which might be Eledil and the faithful leaving Numenor to sail to Middle-earth. He finds the Elven king Gil-galad there--who we see in the next shot.
15.) Gil-galad
Together, Gil-galad and Elendil form the last alliance between men and Elves against Sauron. Here we see him warning Elrond that "darkness will march over the face of the Earth."
16.) An orc march?
They're difficult to see but it looks like these torch wielding marchers are wearing animal skulls and pelts--this could very well be a band of orcs.
17.) Tar-Miriel?
This is very likely our first good look at the Numenorean queen Tar-Miriel who was meant to rule, until she was forcibly married off to her cousin Pharazon who took the crown for himself and was eventually tricked by Sauron, leading to the downfall of the kingdom. Also notice that white ash in the air? It could be their great white tree being cut down.
18.) A blurry man
The Harfoots here are meeting a man who is deliberately out of focus--is this the result of that comet? And if so, is this our first real shot of Gandalf? We've had glimpses of what could be him, like his hands in the first teaser, but this could be a look at his face. If, of course, this is even Gandalf at all--currently, the character is only listed as "The Stranger."
19.) Elrond and Moria
Elrond is being escorted through Moria here, to presumably meet with King Durin--who tells him "I am sorry, but their time has come."
20.) Isildur?
This is very likely Isildur, the man who would go on to become the King of Gondor, who famously kept the One Ring rather than destroying it when he had the chance.
21.) Arondir
Arondir is a new character invented for the show, so we don't know a ton about him--other than he apparently has some sort of forbidden romance with a human woman, which parallels Tolkien stories about characters like Aragorn and Arwen or Beren and Luthien.
22.) Elendil?
This is likely Elendil, a human who helped lead the people of Numenor after its downfall. He also happens to be Isildur's father. He's talking about the past being dead and the need to move forward, the sentiment that likely drives him to form an alliance with Gil-galad.
23.) Pharazon?
Pharazon is one of the direct causes of Numenor's downfall, and this is likely him inciting a mob within the city.
24.) Mithril
When the Dwarves discovered Mithril, it tempted them too greatly and they began to mine too deep and too aggressively. This would eventually lead to them awakening the Balrog and causing the downfall of Moria all together.
25.) Arondir vs. Warg
It looks like Arondir is having a pretty bad day--here we see him in a leg chain being set upon by a monstrous Warg, a demonic wolf that was later used by Sauron, but here is likely being used by Orcs.
