Halo Season 1, Episode 5: 10 "Reckoning" Easter Eggs And References You Missed Friv 0

The fifth episode of Halo, "Reckoning," has arrived on Paramount+ and it included some pretty major moments. Not only did we get a battle between the UNSC and the Covenant that was thoroughly violent, this episode was also a huge turning point for John, as he learned more about his past.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Halo Season 1, Episode 5–"Reckoning." If you've yet to watch the episode, you should stop reading now.

The episode was built around John realizing the truth behind his winding up in the Spartan program. Halsey took him from his family, replacing him with a clone. It remains to be seen what happens next and how this will impact the dynamic between the two, but Chief is clearly filled with rage over the deception.

"Reckoning" filled to the brim with story developments--including Kai revealing to John that she'd removed the chip that controls her emotions. It also contained a number of Easter eggs and references to the larger Halo universe--and even played with the established timeline of the games and novels. Ultimately, that works, though, as this show exists in a parallel timeline.

Take a look at the ten best Easter eggs from the episode below and sound off in the comments with whatever we missed!

Previous Halo Easter egg guides:

1. Better than a holster

Early in the episode, we see the Spartans suiting up to rejoin Master Chief. One of them sticks a pistol to his leg, rather than using a holster for it. This is because, as explained in the games, the Spartan suits use magnets to attach weaponry.

2. That's one sassy AI

At about 12:30 into the episode, Cortana gives Chief some serious sass after he chastises Kai for removing her emotion chip. Of course, anyone who has played the Halo games knows the AI has a seriously sarcastic streak, often aimed at Chief.

3. "You replaced me"

At about 24:30, Chief accuses Halsey of replacing him "with something." What he's talking about is a flash clone. Those are the clones that were placed with families whose children were taken into the Spartan program. The clones did not survive long.

4. Banshees

At 27:39, the UNSC is under attack by the Covenant and we see a number of Banshees firing upon the space marines. Banshees are ground support ships that were first introduced in the original Halo game. They can carry one person and pack quite a punch, in terms of firepower.

5. Drop pods

Another Covenant transportation method we see at about 29:50 is the drop pod, which lets Covenant troopers land on a planet and carry out an assault. These, too, are seen often in the games.

6. Hey, that's my car

At around 30:20, one of the grunts that have landed on the planet hijacks the Warthog being driven by UNSC soldiers–this after the gunner of the vehicle was exploded by a needler, which we learned all about last week.

7. That's odd

At 31:30, we see a troop of jackals drop from a Covenant drop ship and they seem to be wielding energy swords. We might be wrong, but that doesn't ring a bell as something that's happened in the games.

8. First-person

At 32:10, we shift to Kai's first-person view of what's going on, complete with her Spartan HUD and the shield depletion sounds from the game. This also happened in the first episode.

9. Covenant Spirit, incoming

At 35:10, another Covenant ship arrives, the Covenant Spirit. This particular class of ships is a troop transport and, based on the design, this is specifically a DX-class dropship. They first appeared in the original game.

10. Well, this could be a problem

At 35:30, the Spirit drops off, of all things, a Brute carrying a gravity hammer. There's a bit of timeline remixing going on here, as both Brutes and gravity hammers didn't first appear in the franchise until Halo 2. All the same, a vicious and brutal Covenant war machine carrying one of the most ridiculous weapons in all of Halo? Sounds like a formidable opponent.
