Spider-Man: No Way Home
Opening on December 17 is the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise. Recently, the latest trailer for the movie dropped, and in it, there's a lot to go over. It's our first time seeing numerous villains in the MCU like Green Goblin, The Lizard, Sandman, and Electro--which were in previous Spider-Man films before the superhero joined the MCU.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is looking for a way for the world to forget that he's Spider-Man, which was revealed by Mysterio and J. Jonah Jameson at the end of Far From Home. Parker joins forces with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to fix this with magic, but in doing so, it unlocks the multiverse, and a bunch of Spider-Man villains start popping up. Now, Spidey has a lot to handle, as everyone has him in his crosshairs.
On top of all that, there are a few costume changes as well. So let's take a look at the new trailer and breakdown what's happening and check out some Easter eggs.
Spider-Man is a menace
In the opening shot of the trailer, we're quickly reminded that the world knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson is putting it on blast on The Daily Bugle. He's apparently "Public Enemy #1" for "murdering" Mysterio, who some think was a hero--even though he was the mastermind behind the attacks in Far From Home.
Spider-Man's girlfriends and bridges are a poor mix
Spidey and MJ are on top of a bridge here, and it's obvious the news media is trying to get some sweet shots of them. One of the most iconic moments from the Spider-Man comics comes from when Green Goblin kidnapped Gwen Stacy, took her to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge (was originally supposed to be the George Washington Bridge). He tossed her off and Spidey saves her with his web, but in doing so, Stacy's neck snaps.
In the Ultimate Comics, Mary Jane Watson was thrown off of the Queensboro Bridge. And in the No Way Home trailer, Spidey and MJ are atop the Queensboro Bridge here.
Green Goblin is back
Willem Dafoe played Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie. While the villain died at the end, this is our first glimpse of the villain in the MCU. However, it's unknown who is playing the Goblin in No Way Home.
Black suit Spider-Man
Many people think if Spider-Man is in a black suit, that means Venom is here! That's not always the case. Spidey did wear a black suit in Far From Home. There's no confirmation that this is a symbiote suit, and have some interesting gauntlets. A little more on this later...
Alfred Molina is Doctor Octopus again
We saw this shot in the first teaser trailer, where Otto Octavius says, "Hello Peter." It will still send chills up Spider-Man fans' spines though. It's wonderful to see Molina back in this role.
The turn...
Spider-Man reveals his face to Octavius, and Doc Ock says, "You're not Peter Parker." Considering the dialogue he has with Peter and friends later on in the trailer, Doc Ock may be the one helping Peter out. Octavius is a genius--a bit of an eccentric sociopath at times--but he's still logical and may be the key to fixing this "Multiverse of Madness."
Nice license plate
While Doc Ock is fighting Spidey, he hurls a car at Parker. The license plate reads "ASM 8183." Time to try and break down these comic book issues to figure out what the reference is.
- Amazing Spider-Man #81 (1970): Spider-Man fights a villain named The Kangaroo. We don't think The Kangaroo will appear in this movie.
- Amazing Spider-Man #81 (December 8, 2021): Ben Reilly Spider-Man fights Miles Morales Spider-Man. The comic is still a month away from releasing, so it's probably not this.
- Amazing Spider-Man #83 (1970): Spidey fights "The Schemer," a villain from the world of organized crime. The Kingpin is also a major part of the issue. It would be very cool to see Kingpin in No Way Home, but that's probably not the case.
- Amazing Spider-Man #243 (Cover release date 8/83): MJ returns to New York. He's dating Amy Powell at the time. This is almost a throwaway issue, so it's not this.
- Amazing Spider-Man #246 (Store release date 8/2/83): It wasn't technically released on the first of the month. However, in this issue, there are a ton of day dreams, while Uatu the Watcher explains about alternate realities and the multiverse. This seems like the most-likely candidate for that reference, since this movie will explore aspects of the multiverse.
Statue of Captain America?
This becomes a set piece later on. Steve Rogers is now an old man thanks to some weird, wonky time travel in Avengers: Endgame. It seems that Captain America is getting his own statue in New York City to thank him for his work.
Ignore Electro in the background
There is a lot of talk on the internet that this shot proves the Venom symbiote is in the movie, because of the black strings on Spidey's shoulders. After watching this over and over and over again--along with the other shot of Spidey in the black suit--it just looks like black wires. These wires could help him harness Doctor Strange's magic without blowing up his suit.
J. Jonah Jameson does more than yell on camera
JK Simmons reprises his role of J. Jonah Jameson again. He played the character in Raimi's Spider-Man movies and had an appearance in Far From Home.
Spidey and Strange aren't best buds
While the two begin to work together, in order to make the world forget he's Spider-Man, there's a turning point where the two are fighting each other. We probably won't know the full scope of this until the movie comes out though.
Look, the star mask--kinda
Jamie Foxx returns as Electro, and while he doesn't have the cheesy-star mask from the comics, there's a shot that pays homage to it, as electricity shoots from his face. IT's nice to see a very different redesign from his appearance from Amazing Spider-Man 2 because that character design was not good.
Doc Ock becomes a good guy, right?
Doc Ock gets blasted from a building from what looks like a jolt of electricity--probably from Electro. Maybe Ock is helping Spidey put the world back together.
The suit still looks silly, in the best way possible
This is our first clear shot of Green Goblin, on his glider, holding a bomb.
Green Goblin again, without a mask
In another quick scene, we see Goblin on the glider throwing projectiles. However, he's not wearing his mask. It's hard to tell who this is, but could it actually be Harry Osborn and not Norman? James Franco played Harry in Raimi's films, and Dane DeHaan played him in Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The DODC is back
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, we're introduced to the Department of Damage Control (DODC). It's a government group that cleans up after superhero battles--and in the comics, many members have superpowers. We didn't see them in Far from Home--or any other MCU movie since--so it's nice to see the group still exists.
Sandman and Lizard!
We finally get to see Sandman and the Lizard here--and also Electro, but we've already seen him in this trailer. You'll notice there's no Doc Ock there. Once again, we're speculating that Doc Ock will join forces with Spider-Man for this battle.
