A new Morbius trailer has arrived
Morbius is finally coming out on January 28, 2022, after some long delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A new trailer arrived recently, giving a bit more insight into what the upcoming movie will be about.
The Sony Marvel movie will follow Dr. Michael Morbius, an award-winning doctor who has his own struggles with a disease that affects him and other people around the world. He wants to find a cure, and in doing so, becomes a vampire--because it's a comic book movie, and this is how things work. However, his new "cure" leads him with a thirst for blood, and now he's a wanted criminal--because he eats people.
The film stars Jared Leto in the titular role and features Adria Arjone (Good Omens), Tyrese Gibson (2 Fast 2 Furious), and Matt Smith (Doctor Who). Daniel Espinosa directs the film, who in 2017 helmed the alien horror film Life.
Taking a look at the latest Morbius trailer, there's a few more things we can gleam from the story and surprises along the way. Additionally, we can take a look at the comics to figure a bit more out about the supporting characters. Here's our breakdown of the Morbius trailer.
This is how disease SPREADS
In order to cure his disease, Dr. Morbius heads to a cave outside of a jungle in an undisclosed location--probably in Central America or South America. He uses some science tech and his own blood to attract bats, which swarm Morbius. This is how new diseases spread, from animal to human--and it's never a good thing.
He's been gone a while
After Morbius became a man swarmed by bats--a bat man--he was gone for two months then found on a container ship. During this brief scene between Morbius and Simon Stoud (Gibson), Morbius is in jail, in that trademark orange jumpsuit. We're guessing that he's probably in jail for killing people and drinking their blood.
He can lift heavy a sarcophagus in his office
One thing the trailer does very well is lay out Morbius' powers. He has super-strength, and we see him lift a sarcophagus. People probably have more questions about why there's a sarcophagus in his office more than the fact he can lift it with ease. He also has increased speed.
Some form of "bat radar"
Aside from the strength and speed, Morbius has what he calls "bat radar." Almost all species of bats--aside from fruit bats--have echolocation. Using high-pitched sounds, bats bounce sound off of objects to get a visual map of their surroundings. Bats are not blind, and they can see pretty well in the dark--even in what we consider "pitch black." This echolocation--or "bat radar" as Morbius strangely puts it--can helps bats find prey or get an idea of surrounding areas they can't see with their eyes.
He can also fly
Morbius also has the ability to fly, which makes him one of the few Marvel superpowered characters to naturally have that ability. The best way to test it is in the New York subway in front of the A Train.
Finally, a movie with a vampire surrounded by blood bags
There is a brief scene where the more animalistic side of Morbius is breaking free--we're assuming it's the animalistic side. At this point, he's in a room filled with blood bags. It's not his blood though, at least not all of it. There are numerous blood types here, so Morbius may have found himself in a blood bank, which is the best place for a vampire to go--at least one trying not to kill people.
Spidey multiverse
There is a lot happening here. On this Daily Bugle front page, the main headline is about Morbius being apprehended. However, there are a couple more Easter eggs here. One of the heads reads "Rhino On The Loose: Zoo Hoax Fools Us All." In Amazing Spider-Man 2, Paul Giamatti appeared as Aleksei Sytsevich, and at the end of the movie, the character appears in a giant, robotic Rhino outfit, and he calls himself "Rhino." It was very silly.
Additionally, there is "Black Cat: Friend of Foe?" Felicity Jones played the character Felicia Hardy in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Eventually, that character would become the thief Black Cat, who is sometimes friend and sometimes foe to Spider-Man.
Simon Stroud
Gibson plays Simon Stroud, a detective after Morbius. In the comics, he was amember of the CIA and then joined the NYPD. He then went on the hunt for a werewolf--which was J. Jonah Jameson's son. After that mystery, he hunted Morbius--later teaming with him. Stroud gets stuck with the really weird cases. It's a bit unclear as to why that mechanical device is on Gibson's arm though.
Loxias Crown
Time to meet your villain. Matt Smith plays Loxias Crown in Morbius. In the comics, he is known as Hunger, a serial killer. After being attacked by Morbius, Hunger gained some of Morbius' powers. It wouldn't be a superhero movie unless the good guy and the bad guy had the exact same powers.
Can you even call this an Easter egg?
Morbius, who has obviously escaped from prison, walks by a poster of Spider-Man with the word "Murderer" written over it. Spidey's costume looks a bit more like the movie version from Sam Raimi's films; however, after Spider-Man: Far From Home, Mysterio revealed to the world that Peter Parker was Spider-Man, and then lied saying Spider-Man killed him. So, Spider-Man is now a murderer to some people, as the world never truly learned that Mysterio was a villain.
Adrian Toomes
Michael Keaton is back, and while it's not clear who he is playing, we can all just assume it's Adrian Toomes AKA Vulture, right? After Spider-Man: Homecoming, Toomes found himself in prison, and it looks like he's getting out of jail now. Sure, Morbius might not take place in the same universe as the Spider-Man movies, but there are a ton of coincidences here. Whatever, everything is part of the multiverse anyway, right?
Venom and Morbius are in the same universe at least
It's been well-established that the Spidey spinoff movies from Sony all take place in the same universe. At the end of the trailer, Morbius jokingly says, "I am Venom."
