It's Thanksgiving week in the United States, and that means one thing: food. OK, there's also getting together with your friends and family and giving thanks, but let's face it: a lot of this revolves around food. To celebrate, we've rounded up some great food scenes in movies--or to be specific, great food fight scenes.

The movie food fight is usually played for comedy effect--let's face it, it's hard to act dramatic and serious when you're being hit in the face by a custard pie. Sometimes the fight starts to break the tension in the scene, while other times, it's simply because the characters want to cause chaos at dinner (an impulse we're betting more than one of you can relate to over the holidays). Often it's a pie, but other food-based weaponry can include eggs, pizza, cakes, or soup. But in every case, it's hugely entertaining to watch.

12. It Takes Two (1995)

The food fight in this Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movie starts with the glorious sight of Steve Guttenberg getting covered in scrambled eggs. Within seconds, an entire hall of kids at summer camp are throwing their breakfasts around, encouraged by Kirstie Alley yelling those immortal words: "FOOD FIGHT!"

11. Whip It (2009)

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut follows the fortunes of a small-town roller derby team. In one scene, main character Bliss (Elliot Page) is confronted by the team's bad girl star player Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis). What starts with a bit of pizza being thrown at Bliss soon descends into a giant food fight between the whole team.

10. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013)

While most movie food fights involve people throwing food at each other, this animated sequel literally features food fighting their enemies. In the movie's climax, Barry the Strawberry frees some "foodimals"--food/animal hybrids that include the Cheespider and Bananostrich--to take on the workers of the evil Live Corp.

9. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

John Cameron Mitchell's cult rock 'n roll musical features one of the more violent food fights on this list. The on-stage provocations of Mitchell's flamboyant East German punk singer Hedwig kicks off a bar fight between fans and those less taken by Hedwig's look and music, with fists and food soon flying in equal measure.

8. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

George Romero's zombie classic is a masterful mix of gore, scares, action, and humor. One of the most overtly silly moments comes towards the end when a gang of bikers invade the heroes' shopping mall sanctuary and start looting the place. Some of the gang decide it would be fun to start throwing custard pies at the zombies who start to swarm into the mall, leading to a splattery montage of undead pie combat.

7. Problem Child 2 (1991)

Trouble-making adopted kid Junior causes a lot of mayhem throughout the two Problem Child movies, and it's inevitable there's a good food fight in there. A visit to a pizza restaurant ends in food-throwing chaos when Junior and his equally mischievous pal Trixie spot Junior's nemesis Principal Igor Peabody and bombard him and his date with flying desserts.

6. Matilda (1996)

The tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull gets her comeuppance at the end of Danny DeVito's Roald Dahl adaptation when her long-suffering pupils drive her from the school by bombarding her with food from their packed lunches. Sandwiches, fruit, cakes--you name it, she gets it. The most satisfying moment comes when Bruce Bogtrotter gets to smear chocolate cake in her face, mirroring the earlier scene when Trunchbull humiliates him by making him eat a whole cake in front of the school.

5. Hook (1991)

Steven Spielberg's Peter Pan movie Hook has many issues, but what it does have is a great, inventive food fight. The Lost Boys are attempting to train Peter to use his imagination as he did as a child. At first, he struggles, but after a bit of verbal sparring with Rufio, suddenly he can see food on his plate--strange and colorful mush. Soon the food is flying everywhere, as all the kids get into chucking the imaginary gunk around. Bangarang!

4. Bugsy Malone (1976)

Alan Parker's musical recreation of 1930s gangster movies featured a cast of kids and custard pie guns. The finale sees Dandy Dan's gang march into Fat Sam's nightclub where they are met by Bugsy and his heavily "armed" crew. A huge gooey, splattery shoot-out ensues as the pies go flying and the bad guys get their just, erm, desserts.

3. The Great Race (1965)

Blake Edwards' big-budget star-studded comedy focuses on a race from New York to Paris and features perhaps the biggest and most expensive food fight ever filmed. During a stop-off in the kingdom of Carpania, the drivers find themselves embroiled in a plot to overthrow the king, leading to a massive pie fight in a bakery. This four-minute scene was filmed over five days, with 4,000 pies thrown at a cost of $200,000 (a staggering $1.6 million in 2021 prices)

2. Blazing Saddles (1974)

Mel Brook's western spoof collapses into chaos in its final scenes, as the fourth wall is broken and the actors find themselves fighting with the cast of another movie on the Warner Bros studio lot. Custard pies go flying, covering not only the actors but a visiting group of tourists on a studio tour.

1. Animal House (1978)

One of the defining moments of John Belushi's career was his impersonation of a zit in this anarchic college classic, as he sprays a table of students with cream from his mouth. This leads to an angry confrontation in the dining room, during which Belushi yells--you got it--"food fight!" Within seconds the entire hall has descended into lunch-throwing chaos.
