The Original Mortal Kombat Characters

Mortal Kombat 11's time-travel narrative makes for a fantastic tribute to the long-running series. Click ahead to see how much the original characters have evolved since their debut in 1992.

Scorpion (Mortal Kombat)

In the first Mortal Kombat, Scorpion was one of the most popular characters in the game. His iconic rope-dart attack is also one the most memorable moves in fighting game history.

Scorpion (Mortal Kombat 11)

To this day, the undead ninja is one of MK's most iconic fighters. In MK11, he assumes his human form, though he'll occasionally battle with his past-self who is in the form of a revenant.

Sub-Zero (Mortal Kombat)

Alongside Scorpion, Sub-Zero is one of the original ninjas in the Mortal Kombat series. His vicious fatality caused quite a stir in 1992, which cemented the game as something to watch out for.

Sub-Zero (Mortal Kombat 11)

As one of the few fighters to appear in every game, MK11 features the second character to possess the name of Sub-Zero, and his powers have greatly surpassed his predecessor.

Johnny Cage (Mortal Kombat)

Johnny Cage was heavily inspired by the then popular movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme, and some of his moves even pay homage to some of the actor's most recognizable moves.

Johnny Cage (Mortal Kombat 11)

Johnny Cage still remains the comic relief of the series. However, that doesn't make him any less of a threat, and he'll quickly use some flexible moves to surprise his opponents.

Raiden (Mortal Kombat)

Heavily inspired by the Storms from John Carpenter's film Big Trouble in Little China, Raiden is the most supernatural character in the original MK roster.

Raiden (Mortal Kombat 11)

The Thunder God is one of MK's most stalwart characters. Though his recognizable hat and moves have remained, his powers have grown significantly since the first game.

Liu Kang (Mortal Kombat)

As one of Mortal Kombat's central protagonists, Liu Kang canonically won the original tournament, defeating Shang Tsung.

Liu Kang (Mortal Kombat 11)

The once altruistic fighter is not as he was in the original game. In MK11, players can fight as both his mortal and Netherrealm incarnations, showing how much he's changed since 1992.

Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)

Inspired by martial arts movie star Cynthia Rothrock, Sonya Blade's move set focuses heavily on grapples and acrobatics. She was the last major addition to the game to help diversify the roster.

Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat 11)

The special forces commander has been through a number of fierce battles against her nemesis Kano, but Sonya is still among the most reliable and battleharded fighters.

Kano (Mortal Kombat)

Inspired by The Terminator, Kano has an imposing presence not seen from other fighters. His heart rip fatality is a reference to a scene from Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom.

Kano (Mortal Kombat 11)

As the leader of the Black Dragon clan, Kano's influence has grown immensly since the original game. However, he still relies on his cybernetics and dirty tricks to take down his foes.

Shang Tsung (Mortal Kombat)

Though he wasn't playable in the original, Shang Tsung was the big bad of Mortal Kombat and has since become a regular for the series.

Shang Tsung (Mortal Kombat 11)

Following the original game, Shang Tsung became a playable character, letting players transform into different fighters in battle. The sorcerer is now a DLC fighter in Mortal Kombat 11.
