10 Best Games We Played at PSX 2016 Friv 0

Quality PlayStation Experiences

This year's PlayStation Experience had an assortment of games to play. While we walked the floor, we got the opportunity to check out some of the best indie games, diving deep into many of distinct, new experiences each had to offer. Click ahead to see the games we liked playing the most at PSX 2016.

Nidhogg 2

Nidhogg 2 is shaping up to be a worthy successor to the original, retaining its signature "back-and-forth" competitive swordplay while adding a wealth of new abilities and weapons. And with its new over-the-top, quirky visual style, the game is at its most expressive and amusing to play and watch.

Vane

In Vane, you play as a child who has the ability to transform into a bird in order to explore and uncover the mysteries littered across the land. Our time with the game lead us to a cavern hidden in the mountains; however, there were plenty of other areas off in the distance to visit, each harboring new secrets that made us want to keep diving deeper into the game's world.

Mages of Mystralia

Mages of Mystralia is a Zelda-inspired action-adventure where you play as a mage on an epic quest to master her magical skills. The game's major highlight is its customizable magic system, which allows you to apply a variety of effects to spells. For instance, you can make a single fire spell shoot multiple projectiles at once, and you can even manipulate the spell's trajectory to circle around and hit nearby enemies multiple times. With plenty of options available to experiment with and fine-tune, this upcoming adventure is well worth keeping an eye on.

Snake Pass

Snake Pass is a distinct, colorful physics-based action-puzzler where you play as a snake. You slither and curl around objects, navigating intricate obstacles and solving a multitude of challenging puzzles. The game's designer, Seb Liese, initially conceived the idea at a game-jam, but eventually pushed it into full development with the help of Sumo Digital (Little Big Planet 3, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed).

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap

This remake of the critically acclaimed classic of the same name captures the charm and challenge of the Japanese original. Just by looking at its remastered visuals, its endearing cast of characters and its vibrant world will enthrall you. But be wary; this journey is no cakewalk. You'll need to hone your platforming skills and reflexes if you hope to survive.

Nex Machina: Death Machine

Housemarque's latest project Nex Machina: Death Machine effectively channels the classic twin-stick shoot-'em-up action of games like Robotron 2084 and Smash T.V. But that's likely because Eugene Jarvis, the creator of those games, is collaborating alongside the studio to create it. The result is an intense affair of frenetic action that looks to take the best from the work of both, combining it into an exhilarating experience of non-stop shooting.

Battle Chef Brigade

Battle Chef Brigade puts you in control of an aspiring young chef named Mina as she fights to become the best cook in the land. But this isn't your typical cooking game; rather than choose from pre-set ingredients in front of you to make a simple dish, you actually have to hunt and gather them yourself, making use of Devil May Cry-esque twitch-based combo system to eliminate them in the wild. You then have to take what you gather back to your kitchen, throw it in a pot, and cook it in a match three mini-game. Frame this within an Iron Chef-like cook off where the clock is ticking against you and you'll have an idea of what you're getting into. The juxtaposition between the two core mechanics of hunting and cooking made for a tense, fast-paced experience that was both memorable and fulfilling.

Jenny Leclue

Jenny Leclue's charming hand-drawn art style is captivating, but its atmospheric world and endearing premise make it worth getting excited about. Told in the form of a meta-narrative, you experience a mystery through the eyes of Jenny Leclue, a fictional character from a detective novel written by fictional author Arthur K. Finklestein. As you control Jenny, you're faced with choices that can affect both Finklestein's story and his narration of the events that occur in the game.

Rain World

Rain World puts you in control of a tiny white creature called a slugcat. When a devastating flood separates it from its family, you're forced to navigate the slugcat through a world filled with danger, as you hunt for food and seek shelter to survive between the threats of torrential downpours. The industrial wasteland of this adventure is bleak, mysterious, and captivating; we're eager to see all the puzzling challenges it has to offer.

What Remains of Edith Finch

Somewhere in Washington is a mysterious house that belongs to the Finch family. Each room in the household is locked, but each contain secrets that shed light on the family's long and tumultuous history. You play as Edith, the last surviving member of the Finch family who’s heard stories about her cursed family and now seeks the truth. What Remains of Edith Finch has proven itself to be more just a "walking simulator." Its distinct premise has us excited to explore the array of rooms in the Finch residence, eager to uncover the dark secrets hidden behind every door.
